Carat weight refers to the weight of the diamond, not the diameter. By definition 1.0 carat is exactly 200 milligrams and therefore 1 gram would be 5.0 carats. The weight of a diamond may also be referred to in terms of “points”, where there are 100 points in a carat. The weight of a diamond will be specified in carats, and not in points, as required by the Federal Trade Commission.
